So I know there has been some talk about units and Faruq's handy little bio thing has a slot for it. What do you have to do to become an official unit? Is there a register process similar to a chapter? Do you even have to make it known nationally, as I know some units have their own website. Or do I just decide to found it with some people?

To be nationally recognized you need a minium of 5 members in a unit. If your not worried about being recognized nationally don't worry about it. If your a small unit you will need to be very active at national events to be known since there are several large units (100+ members) and scads of mid size units ranging from 15-75 members.

Alright. Thanks. I think I'd like to be nationally recognized, I just need to get the word out. I tried putting something on the main Dag forum, but that didn't really pan out. I guess I just need to go to events and talk with people.

Basically to start out you have 3 options: 1- be a mercenary with no unit 2- join an exisisting unit 3- get some friends together and start a unit, after a while as people get to know you and you get more recoginition (going to events, hosting events, volunteering at events, etc) you will start to get folks interested in joining you (hopefully)

What's your general goal and backstory for your unit?

Yeah, what kind of unit are you wanting to start? What's it going to be about? Are you going to be a merc unit or just a unit that fights on their own. Just ask around at practices to see what the players want and form your unit around that, or form your unit and bring people in to it.

Well Reeder and I want to see if their are other Brothers in our fraternity around the country who participate in Dag. If there are, I wanted to create a unit for us all to meet up and fight in during large events.

I agree, a lot of it is networking.
Some other strategies are catering to an interest: your fraternity, Templars, Romans, Elves, etc.
Despic suggested when I wanted to start one that we don't have a theme, but a generic background.
Things to keep in mind!

Yeah I think I might scrap the idea of having an all Fraternity Brother unit. I put a call out post on the main Dag forum and i haven't gotten anything more than a question about what my fraternity even IS in like 2 weeks.
I did think of a completely different idea: Since the backstory for my character (which I haven't moved here from UGL yet) involved training to be the next captain of the guard in my home city, I was thinking about creating a Stormhaven Town Guard or Vanguard or something similar. I kind of got the idea from the Goons or at least the idea of a (semi in our case) elite group within our chapter.
I envision it as a group of those loyal to Stormhaven, possibly as a unit that would travel with a battle standard/flag (if we make one) and guard it on the field. I guess I want it to be a group of characters with similar backgrounds and we've set ourselves up as the Defenders of our settlement. Something like that

I guess I want it to be a group of characters with similar backgrounds and we've set ourselves up as the Defenders of our settlement. Something like that Join Defenders of the Land -nudge nudge- In my opinion, since Stormhaven doesn't have permanent fighters (besides me), perhaps we establish an "Order". Orders aren't battle companies but they may be for races (Brotherhood of Stone out of Indy is for Dwarves) or ideals (Silver Order is for knights wanting to improve, be good sports, etc.) Honestly, I want to be in the Silver Order or do something like it. I picture: "The Order of the Crown" You have people training to be good sports, improve their schools, be humble, and respectful, etc. You can fight as an honorguard to your realm's king. For us it would be Stormhaven. When you leave, it would be Northern Steppes or Mittelmarch or beyond. The Order would have to be established after an act from our king or an existing order or something. But who would be worthy? I mean if I jump up and say, "yep I'm Sir Batu, I'm takin' squires" well that's arrogant and shows that I don't know humility. So starting it could be tricky. I really like what the Silver Order has going on. Ranks receive distinguishing things like a sash or a sword or something that shows they are members.

Since Batu brought it up, if you are interested in joining Defenders, come find me and we'll have the first of what will probably be several conversations about it.
I'm all for units, and I'm definitely all for a unit that is entirely made of up fraternity types... that sounds pretty sweet. Honestly, I think it would be nice, here at Stormhaven at least, to see a pan-helenic unit.

I just expressed interest in joining Defenders on their forum. Sounds like the place for me. And I'd love to talk with you about it sometime, although I won't be at Dag the next few weeks.
