Weapon Ratings
Untrained - This rating is for those who have little or no familiarity with a particular weapon. Fighters who have an Untrained rating in a weapon may not use that weapon on the main field during practices or events. Fighters who are untrained with reds, for example, have little experience with a red weapon, may or may not know the basic rules of a red, and are not allowed to wield a red on the main battlefield of a practice or event. Untrained fighters wishing to become Proficient should seek the advice and tutelage of a fighter who is at least Proficient with the weapon of choice either separate from the main practice field or away from practice entirely. Note: New fighters are allowed to use single blue weapons, regardless of their Untrained status. We all have to start somewhere.
Proficient - A Proficient fighter is one who knows the rules for a particular weapon and has proven that they can wield it safely on the battlefield. A Proficient fighter need not be 'good', but they do need to be able to wield the weapon safely and within the rules. Single Blue must be the first Proficiency a fighter earns. Proficiency can be granted by any present Dagorhir Administrator or Moderator.
Skilled - A skilled fighter has risen above the crowd to a noticeable degree, but still has much to learn. A skilled fighter must own their own weapon of the appropriate type. To achieve this rating a fighter must pass two combat trials. First, the person testing must simultaneously defeat 2 fighters who are proficient in the same weapon being tested. Then, the person testing must defeat one fighter who is skilled at the weapon being tested. If, after a reasonable time, no Skilled fighters are available (or if there simply are no fighters Skilled with the weapon being tested), this second test may be waived or an alternate test may be proposed by the Dagorhir Administrator.
Adept - An adept fighter is one who has progressed well beyond the skills of the fighters around them. An Adept owns his own weapon and has demonstrated the ability to construct said weapon to meet the safety standards of Dagorhir. (Note, Archers may purchase bows.) Adepts have proven themselves by helping others learn how to wield the weapon safely. Combat trails for Adepts are as follows. First, an Adept must simultaneously defeat three proficient fighters who are armed with the weapon being tested. Then, an Adept must simultaneously defeat two Skilled fighters who are armed with the same weapon being tested. Finally, an Adept must defeat an Adept of the weapon being tested. If, after a reasonable time, no Adept fighters are available (or if there simply are no fighters Adept with the weapon being tested), this third test may be waived or an alternate test may be proposed by the Dagorhir Administrator.
Master - A master is a god amongst mortals. Few, in their time in Stormhaven, achieve this rank. To become a Master one must prove their devotion to the chapter not only by constructing their own weapon, but also constructing at least one of the weapon for the Stormhaven community to use. Similarly, a Master consistently makes her foamsmithing wisdom available to those wishing to construct the mastered weapon. A Master must have wielded said weapon at at least one national event without incident. Combat trials for a Master are as follows: First, a Master must simultaneously defeat four proficient fighters armed as they like. Then, a Master must simultaneously defeat three Skilled fighters, at least one being armed with the weapon being tested, the others armed as they like. Next, a Master must defeat two Adept fighters who are armed as they like. Finally, a Master must defeat a Master of the weapon being tested. If, after a reasonable time, no Master-level fighters are available (or if there simply are no fighters who have Mastered with the weapon being tested), this final test may be waived or an alternate test may be proposed by the Dagorhir Administrator.
While one fighter is allowed to take multiple rating tests in one practice, only one test may be made per weapon per practice. An example, Jim may test for Adept of Single Blue, then test for Master of Rocks (go Jim!) in one practice, but may not test for Master of Single Blue in the same practice, even if he passes the Adept of Single Blue test. An exception to this is Proficiencies, you may not gain more than one proficiency per practice. There is no penalty for failing a test, though a Dagorhir Administrator, Moderator, or any Herald may pull a fighter from the field if they feel the fighter is fighting unsafely.
Those wishing to test for missile weapons should speak with a Dagorhir Administrator or Moderator for appropriate tests.

The real purpose behind this is two fold:
#1 Safety - We simply can't have people running around with weapons they don't know how to use. The best way to keep this in check is to actually -know- what weapons people can use safely and make them demonstrate this before taking the main field with a given weapon.
#2 Motivation - There are a handful of fighters here who are head-and-shoulders above everyone else while the majority of our melee fighters continue to languish. Most chapters find that the competency of their rank-and-file membership increases substantially over time when those rank and file members are interested in advancing along a ranking path, and thus actively working on their fighting skills. The more competent fighters we have, the better everyone gets.
